Programmable logic controller having micro-electromechanical system based switching

A programmable logic controller is disclosed. The programmable logic controller includes at least one micro electromechanical system (MEMS) switch (36) connected to an I/O module (24). The MEMS switch (36) is connected to an external device (54) to receive and transmit signals to the external device (54). The programmable logic controller also may include a MEMS switch and a voltage sensor (90) for measuring the voltage across the MEMS switch. The MEMS switches (36) are arranged to transmit or receive logic signals.
