The system to determine at least one function or characteristic (2) e.g. the play of a mechanical automobile mechanism, driven by an electrical or pneumatic or hydraulic unit, has a sensor which delivers a time signal pulse on the rotation of the motor or a fixed fraction of the rotation. Using the time duration and the known movement path the theoretical movement path can be determined. Using the known qualitative known progress of the time duration and at least one characteristic value (3-7) of the actual time progress according to the theoretical movement path a characteristic can be derived for processing.
