Positive electrodes of a battery consist of an oxide of silver supported on a wire gauze or screen of silver or nickel and are made by pasting the gauze with a mixture of silver oxide, water and a wetting agent. The pasted plates may be grooved and are reduced to spongy silver by sintering at 880 ‹ F. or by drying the plates and passing them through a gas flame. The sintered plates are compressed to smooth out any irregularities and are then oxidized electrolytically against dummy plates in a solution of potassium hydroxide or by being assembled in a cell with negative plates pasted with zinc oxide. Plates of opposite polarity are separated by paper and the positive plates may be enclosed in synthetic fibre bags. Formation takes place in a 5 per cent potassium hydroxide solution, the current being passed through the cell for 12 to 24 hours. The cell is then discharged and again charged for two or three hours. The cell is washed out and the positive plates removed from their fibre bags, washed and dried. They may be given an additional formation against nickel dummies in a 10 per cent hot solution of potassium hydroxide after which they are again washed and dried. Before being assembled in a battery the edges of the positive plates are pressed to flatten jagged edges, protruding wires, &c. The negative plates of the battery may be of the kind described in Specification 761,320 in which spongy zinc is carried on a copper, bronze, or silver screen coated with a hard non-porous layer of zinc. Positive and negative plates are separated by paper, resin-impregnated' fabric, &c. and are immersed in an electrolyte consisting of a 31-33 per cent solution of potassium hydroxide which is added when the cell is required for use.
