The device has a guide rail (4) provided with locking recesses in different height positions. An actuation unit e.g. master disc, stays in effective connection with a sliding element (5), where the actuation unit is provided for an actuation by a drive. A height position of the sliding element is fixable by the actuation unit. The actuation unit moves a locking unit of the sliding element from a locking position and shifts the sliding element in a direction, during movement of the actuation unit along the direction. An independent claim is also included for a method for shifting a sliding element of a holding device for a belt of a vehicle.
