PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic EL element capable of reducing short-circuits between the lower part electrode and the upper part electrode. SOLUTION: In the organic EL element including the lower part electrode 12, the upper part electrode 19, and an organic EL material layer (positive hole injection layer 13) formed by a coating between the electrodes, between banks 14 formed on a substrate 11, the organic EL material layer (positive hole injection layer 13) covers a part of the banks 14, and an insulating layer 15 is formed between the organic EL material layer (positive hole injection layer 13) and the upper part electrode 19 on the banks 14.
