A tubular body 11, Fig. 1, of metal or a plastic such as polythene has at each end a perforate disc - like member 12, Fig. 3, secured thereto by spinning or rolling together a flange 12b on the member 12 and a flange 11a on the cylinder 11. Before the second member 12 is secured the cylinder is filled with zeolite crystals or the like. The annular bead 13 formed in the manner described, or otherwise, is provided to enable terminal adaptors moulded from a resilient and durable material such as vulcanised rubber, and having an internal groove (e.g. 14a), to be snapped over the ends of the complete cartridge. An upper terminal adaptor 14, Fig. 5, is shaped for attachment to a tap and a lower adaptor, Fig. 6 (not shown) has a central orifice at its lower end for discharge of softened or filtered water. In Fig. 1 each terminal adaptor comprises a dome 16 furnished with an internally screw-threaded metallic bush the top of which is flush with the dome surface. The upper adaptor 16 has screwed into it the terminal part of a " push-on " tap union 18, Fig. 9. For filling a washing-machine the nipple of a hose pipe may be connected to the lower adaptor 16. For hairshampooing or the like the nipple on one end of a flexible hose pipe may be connected to the upper dome 16, the other end of the pipe being connected to the tap ; the lower adaptor 14 is in this case omitted. |
