Disclosed are (1) a secondary carboxylic acid compound represented by the general formula (I) below, preferably by the general formula (II) below, and having an ester group in a molecule; and (2) an electrolyte solution for mid to high voltage electrolytic capacitors containing such a secondary carboxylic acid compound and/or a salt thereof. The electrolyte solution has high withstand voltage and high conductivity, while being excellent in chemical conversion properties. (In the formulae, R1 and R2 independently represent an alkyl group having 1-8 carbon atoms; and n represents an integer of 2-8.)
