<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gas sensor controlling device capable of preventing cracking of a sensor element in consideration of the fuel properties. <P>SOLUTION: An engine system comprises a first oxygen sensor 64 including a sensor element 65 exposed to exhaust gas of an engine 2 and a heater for activating the sensor element 65, an ECU 4 for continuing a low temperature mode for a predetermined period from the start of the engine the heater is controlled so that the sensor element 65 is maintained at a temperature lower than a temperature for breaking the element by wetting, and switching the same to a high temperature mode after elapse of the predetermined period where the heater is controlled so that the sensor element 65 reaches its activating temperature, a light emitting element 81 for detecting the alcohol concentration in a fuel as the properties of the fuel to be supplied to the engine 2, and a light receiving element 82.
