<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a detecting apparatus and a detecting method, capable of surely detecting the presence or absence of an invader. <P>SOLUTION: The detecting apparatus which detects the presence or absence of the invader based on a reception wave, includes: a receiving section which receives the reception wave and outputs a reception signal contained in the reception wave; and a determining section which determines the presence or absence of periodicity of the reception signal, based on first and second thresholds for the reception signal.
