An optical bench 10 comprises a substantially planar optical bench member 12 with a plurality of optical component mounting sockets 14 each socket defining a reference surface 14c for precision positioning of a plurality of optical components (18) within the sockets, the sockets being adapted to engage the lower half of an optical component (18) and having retaining means (14b) to retain an optical component against the reference surface, the upper part of the optical component protruding above the surface of the optical bench member in order that a beam of light may reach it (figure 2). The device may be of a glass ceramic or silicon material, the sockets may be blind or closed off by a second layer of material. Preferably the retaining means may comprise resilient biasing means (16) formed within the body member such as a ball catch (14b) or bale catch. Alternatively the retaining means may comprise screw fixings, cam actuated retaining means or bonding means. |
