The device has components e.g. transistors (2, 3) and logic circuits (7, 10), supplied by power supply of an electromechanical relay (18) and arranged for detecting a mismatch between a control and relay position. A switch i.e. transistor (1), cuts the current in a coil (16) if the components detect the mismatch. A current measuring device measures drain current when the supply circuit is closed, and is arranged for signaling the fault of the relay when the drain current is less than a threshold lower than nominal current. An independent claim is also included for a method for protecting an electromagnetic relay.
