<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing apparatus and an image processing method for changeably correcting correction intensity from a handwritten character to a reference character for recognition while holding features of the inputted handwritten character. <P>SOLUTION: Handwritten character image data are inputted to a character recognition block 5 and a character feature analysis block 6 through a straight line and/or curve correction block 4. A reference character is recognized, feature data of the reference character is read and feature data in the handwritten character image data is extracted by character recognition and feature analysis.
