The device has a mechanical adjusting unit connected with a drive (28) that is connected with an electric motor (26). A crash sensor (46) detects an accident-critical situation of a motor vehicle. A control circuit adjusts an operating voltage for the motor and adjusts an excess voltage for supply of the motor. The sensor provides no signal during a normal operating voltage in a normal driving condition of the vehicle and emits a signal during the excess voltage in a driving condition. The excess voltage amounts to 200 percentage of the value of the normal operating voltage.
