PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photographing device which is capable of precisely performing focus adjustment with less time lag when photographing in a live view display state, and to provide a control method of the photographing device. SOLUTION: Image data acquired by an imaging device 221 is used to perform a live view display operation on a liquid crystal monitor 26, and a photographic optical system 101 is moved to an in-focus position by contrast AF when a release button 21 is half-depressed (#105). Further, when the release button 21 is fully depressed (#107), after the photographic optical system 101 is moved to the in-focus position by phase difference AF (#121), a photographing operation is performed (#125). However, in the case that contrast of a subject image is lower than a prescribed value (#115→Y) when the release button 21 is fully depressed, phase difference AF control is inhibited to perform the photographing operation (#125).
