PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a heat treatment method and a heat treatment apparatus capable of efficiently performing the heat treatment of a workpiece by the simple control. SOLUTION: A workpiece is subjected to carburization and diffusion treatment in a carburizing chamber. The workpiece is carburized by a carbon potential adjusting mechanism while the carbon potential in the carburizing chamber is set to be the first high carbon potential. Then, the carbon potential in the carburizing chamber is reduced to the second carbon potential lower than the first carbon potential by the carbon potential adjusting mechanism, and the second carbon potential is maintained for the predetermined time to allow the workpiece to be subjected to diffusion treatment.
