The device has a protective element i.e. radio frequency identification tag (2), that is wearable on a hand and defines a minimum distance from a danger source e.g. swimming pool (12), for monitoring an animal or a child approaching the danger source. A transmitter (20) is integrated with the protective element and transmits radio signals (26) identifying the danger source. A self-sustaining, battery-buffered power supply for the transmitter is integrated with the protective element. A switch switches on or off the transmitter, and is integrated with the protective element. An independent claim is also included for a method for warning a chaperon when an animal or a child approaches a danger source.
