A polarisation maintaining, single polarisation propagating, optical waveguide 100 comprises a central core 102 forming a light guide, an inner cladding layer 104, an elliptical stress region 106 which induces strain birefringence in the waveguide, an outer cladding layer 108 and a substrate layer 110. A method of manufacture is also disclosed. The waveguide is for use in an optical interferometric sensor system. |
