The invention relates to a liquid filter for an internal combustion engine, comprising a housing, a removeable cover which can close the housing, an exchangeable filter insert which comprises a filter area which can be cross-flown by a liquid, unfiltered or filtered side flow channels for the liquid which are separated from each other by means of the filter area, and a non-return valve which enables the filter to be cross-flown due to pressure conditions arising when the internal combustion engine is in operation. When the internal combustion engine is not in operation, the flow path of the liquid is blocked such that the liquid in the housing is held in front of the housing. The non-return valve is arranged in the filtered side of the flow channel of the liquid filter.
