<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a linear motor type automatic door improved in usability to return a door into a closed end position to be totally closed when giving a closing assist to a door body in opening operation while preventing the door from being inadvertently set to a manual mode and half-opened. <P>SOLUTION: The door is controlled not to be set to the manual mode only by carrying out opening assist operation beyond a predetermined distance but to be set to manual mode (step 114) only after carrying out opening assist operation (step 106) and then closing assist operation (step 113) within a manual mode discrimination time (step 112). A manual mode discrimination point is set to a point immediately in front of an opening end. When the opening assist operation is performed to the door body immediately in front of the opening end, the door body collides with the opening end. When the closing assist operation is performed within a manual mode discrimination time after the collision, the door body is set to the manual mode.
