<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To measure smell likely to change with time with high accuracy and to express the measurement result by language so as to be easily understandable for people. <P>SOLUTION: A type of smell is discriminated from a two-dimensional vector signal of a semiconductor smell sensor, and the type of the smell and the certainty of discrimination are expressed by a human-understandable language. When using a smell sensor, a method for accumulating and absorbing smell generated from an origin of the smell and a method for directly absorbing the smell are used. A plurality of smell observation values are clustered in advance to find a distribution shape, the distribution shape is stored, and discriminated by using Euclidian distance to the smell observation values, and certainty is calculated on the basis of the magnitude of distance values.
