A system and a method to providing a location based service in a mobile communication system are provided to supply various services based on an LBS in the mobile communication system using WiMAX forum network working group standards, thereby providing new profits to a communication provider. When a location server(LS)(121) receives a location trigger demanding location information of a mobile terminal(MS)(100) from a location client, an authentication request message requesting an identification of an anchor authenticator with regard to the MS is transmitted to a right, authentication and accounting server. The accounting server transmits an authentication response message including ID of the anchor authenticator to an LS. The LS transmits an LCID request message demanding LCID of a serving location controller(151) about the MS to the anchor authenticator. The anchor authenticator transmits an LCID response message including the LCID of the serving LC to the LS.
