PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus stabilizing the speed of an intermediate transfer belt 25 more satisfactorily than heretofore. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus is configured to form a prescribed pattern image constituted of a plurality of toner patch images arranged in the surface moving direction of an endlessly moving intermediate transfer belt 25 on the surface of the intermediate transfer belt 25, to calculate a fluctuation amount in terms of periodical fluctuation in speed or position of the belt based on the detection results of individual toner patch images constituting the pattern image detected by sensors, to correct an image forming condition based on the calculation results, and then, to suppress the positional deviation in terms of a toner image transfer position from the photoreceptor 4 to the belt. The plurality of sensors (Ps1 and Ps2) are arranged so that the sensors detect the individual toner patch images in mutually different positions in the belt surface moving direction, and also, the fluctuation amount in terms of the fluctuation in speed or position at different cycle times is calculated based on the detection results by the sensors.
