A method of treating ballast water, in which the ballast water is conveyed into a ballast tank (12) via a down pipe (1), and in which an underpressure created at the upper portion (10) of the down pipe (1) induces the formation of gas bubbles in the ballast water, and in which ozone is added to the ballast water before or as the ballast water enters the down pipe (1).
