PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus having a remote release function of starting a release operation in shutter timing that a camera operator intends during self-photography of either one person or a plurality of persons, and to provide an imaging method. SOLUTION: When a smiling face detection release mode is selected in self-menu display (S14), a face is detected in a subject image and a smiling-face level R is determined for the face image (S16). When the smiling-face level exceeds a predetermined value, it is decided that the shutter may be released, and a photography sequence for acquiring and recording image data of a subject 15 is carried out (S18).
