<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic encoder having small variation of a gap between a magnetic sensor element and a magnetic medium, easily assembled, having a small number of parts, high in sliding resistance, stable to external force such as impact, and allowing the use of the magnetic sensor element in a state of being cut from a wafer with a grinding wheel. <P>SOLUTION: A holding mechanism of a magnetic sensor has a spiral plate spring structure having elasticity for the rotation about the axis of rotation in the direction of reciprocal sliding relative movement, elasticity for the rotation about the axis of rotation in a direction perpendicular to the direction of reciprocal relative movement and in parallel with the magnetic medium, and elasticity in a direction perpendicular to the sensor element.
