PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for deciding pass/fail of a nonmetallic inclusion defect that can prevent excessive incidence of rejects and make a release decision to satisfy customers' quality requirements by making a decision in consideration of the position of an inclusion in the thickness direction of a metal band. SOLUTION: In the method for deciding pass/fail of a nonmetallic inclusion defect that decides pass/fail based on the information on the position, size and number of a nonmetallic inclusion that is present in a metal band and detected by ultrasonic inspection, a pass/fail decision is made based on different standards for the size of a nonmetallic inclusion to be counted as a defect and/or the number of nonmetallic inclusions to be set as a standard for a pass/fail decision depending on the positions in the thickness direction of the metal band.
