PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect a fluid level using a simple constitution. SOLUTION: The tip of a probe 283 is inserted into a reagent container and is moved to an initial position. Suction operation is performed by the probe 293. Then, air is sucked, when the tip of the probe 293 is not in contact with the fluid level of a reagent or the reagent is sucked, when the tip comes into contact with the fluid level. Subsequently, the tip of the probe 293 is moved in upward by a predetermined length d. Discharge operation is performed by the probe 293. The discharging pressure of the probe at that time is detected, and thereby the discharge condition of the reagent is determined. While the probe 293 is moved stepwisely downward, until the probe 293 discharges the reagent, at every step suction operation and discharge operation are performed by the probe 293. When the discharge operation is performed, if the reagent is discharged by the probe 293, the fluid level of the reagent is determined, based on a lowered amount from the initial position of the probe 293.
