PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for efficiently producing sugars, such as glucose and xylose from lignocellulosic biomass, at low cost. SOLUTION: The method for producing sugars from a lignocellulosic biomass comprises a weak acid hydrothermal treatment process to treat a raw material mixture containing a lignocellulosic biomass, a weak acid (phosphoric acid, or the like) and water in a nitrogen gas atmosphere and under heating (373-453 K) and pressure (0.1-5 MPa). The method may further contain an enzyme saccharification treatment process for enzymatically saccharifying undecomposed cellulose, after the weak acid hydrothermal treatment process.
