PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suitably detect the position of a facial organ from a face image using a detector configured using statistical learning such as Adaboost algorithm. SOLUTION: Using the fact that the approximate size of a face can be determined by performing face detection prior to the detection of a facial organ, the face image previously detected is normalized in advance so that the corresponding facial organ has about the same resolution as a facial organ detector. Using only the facial organ detector fixed to one size, the facial organ is detected from the face image after the normalization. The need to convert each detected face to a plurality of resolutions and perform scans for each resolution is eliminated, and the amounts of computations and memories required can be greatly reduced.
