<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a natural convection-type heat sink and a cooling apparatus for cooling a heating element which is suitable for an LED lighting device etc., and has an increased cooling capacity. <P>SOLUTION: The heat sink 30 for cooling the heating element 3 comprises a band-shaped metal plate 31 rolled around a central axis CL formed into a scroll shape, wherein the height of one end of the central axis direction gradually increases toward the central part 31a from the outside in the diameter direction. A plurality of air intake openings 32 penetrating the metal plate 31 in the thickness direction are formed at the other end of the central axis direction. The cooling apparatus 10 comprises the heat sink 30 and a printed wiring board 20 mounted with the heating element 3 on its lower surface.
