PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To promote image reading without falling into the situation where image reading should be interrupted in the middle, in an image reading apparatus. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus reads images from an entire document while repeating line reading operation for linearly reading images by means of an image reading sensor while moving the image reading sensor. The image reading apparatus sets such a line reading time interval (time interval of repetition of line reading operation) that the line reading time interval becomes equal to or longer than an image data transfer required time (time required for completing transfer of image data of images for one line read by the line reading operation to a computer). Setting of the line reading time interval is performed by outputting a blanking clock pulse 71 (namely, by providing a blanking term that does not contribute to the line reading operation) continuously to a light reception output clock pulse 71 for giving timing to read an image in the line reading operation.
