PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a consumable electrode welding method which solves a problem that, in a conventional consumable electrode welding method, necessity of inverting action of a robot manipulator requires excessive response time and speed adjusting time, and further, feeding of welding wire can not catch up with the melting rate of the welding wire, causing an arc length to become long and then an arc to become unstable. SOLUTION: Initial arc is generated after a welding wire 1 is separated from a base material 7 by moving a welding torch 4 in a direction separating it from the base material 7 with a robot manipulator 9 while feeding the welding wire 1, so that inverting action becomes unnecessary, a useless time is reduced and a tact time is shortened, and also, an arc at a weld-start edge is stabilized to reduce short stoppages effectively.
