<p>Improved, bonded, sintered rods of refractory material have a fluted cross-section. The fluting preferably takes the form of 8 peripherally spaced, trapezoidal-shaped longitudinally disposed grooves. The rods preferably have an outer diameter of 3/16 of an inch and grooves having a depth of 1/32 of an inch. Fluted zirconia or alumina rods are made by mixing coarse gram oxide with a temporary binder, extruding the mixture to form a fluted rod and forming the rod to sinter the particles and drive off the binder; the rods have a porosity of from 8-40% of open and connecting pores and contain 96% and 95% by weight of zirconia and aluminia respectively. Specifications 745,259, 745,275, 833,107 and 852,484 are referred to.ALSO:Bonded, sintered rods of refractory material which are used in the process for coating articles by flame spraying have a fluted cross-section.
