Catalyst supports are prepared by kneading a mixture of ZnO, CaO, NH4HCO3 and an aqueous liquid into a pasty mass, the NH4HCO3 being present in an amount at most that theoretically necessary wholly to transform the metal oxides into carbonates, forming the kneaded mass into discrete particles, drying the particles, and subjecting them to heat at a temperature of from 250-350 DEG C. Nickel may be the supported metal and may be incorporated during the preparation of the support e.g. as carbonate, nitrate, oxalate or formate. The catalyst after use may be regenerated by heating in an oxidizing atmosphere at 420-450 DEG C.
|
