A shocking chamber (11) for performing electroporation is constructed in the form of a base (12) and a hinged lid (13) which when lowered forms an enclosure (22) with the base (12) that fully encloses a cuvette (23) and impresses high voltage across the cuvette (23), the voltage connection becoming disengaged upon the simple raising of the lid (13). The base (12) contains two pairs of electrical leads, one pair (24,25) engaging the cuvett e (23) with spring-loaded contacts that provide electrical connections to the cuvette (23) while helping to secure the cuvette (23) in place, and the othe r pair (32,33) joined to high-voltage terminals (34,35). A shunt (45) built in to the lid (13) bridges the two pairs of leads in the base when the lid (13) is closed and pivots out of the way to clear all leads when the lid (13) is opened. These and other features of the construction provide the user with a safe and secure means of forming the high-voltage electrical connections use d in electroporation in an apparatus that can be operated with one hand.</SDOA B>
