PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a masking method of a base material with high mask dimensional accuracy with a simple masking.

SOLUTION: In the masking method of a base material, a film 20 such as a seal coat for masking as an example is coated on a fuel cell separator base material 10 provided with a seal coat cut groove for masking 18 on a surface (S100). Next, the film 20 is made to have a cut along the seal coat cut groove for masking 18 with the use of a cutting tool 30 (S102). Then, by leaving a cutting film piece 20a on a non-treated part without applying a surface treatment of the fuel cell separator base material 10, a place without a need of coating on the fuel cell separator base material 10, that is a cutting film piece 20b on a surface treatment part, is separated (S104).
