A shearing or mixing appts. is used for working plastics, esp. reacting mixts., pref. after they leave an extruder and before they reach the injection head. The appts. comprises a revolving mandrel in a housing. The gap between mandrel and housing is sealed by a barrier liquid. This liquid may be either a non-reacting mass having a similar viscosity to the mixt., esp. the principal component of the mixt. (e.g. the plastics component without expanding agent in the case of a foam, or a two-component or multi-component non-reacting mixt.
