A candle or lamp shade manufactured from metal and having a series of holes cut into its surface in a random and uneven manner, has the holes cut into the surface by means of a melting process. The material melted out of the holes is not removed but allowed to drip and flow down the sides of the shade when it solidifies to form decorative patterns. In the melting process only the upper edge of the hole is melted as is the upper open edge of the cylindrical shade itself. The bottom edge of the cylinder is provided with a flange which serves as a foot member which stabilises the shade when it is stood up.
