The state of the surface of a mechanical piece part is checked during manufacture by an optical system. The latter comprises a tubular body (1) contg. a mirror (4) opposite an opening (2) which is directed towards a surface (3) being inspected. An objective lens (6) directs the image through a transparent blade (11) onto which light is directed by a lens from a bulb (12). This allows the inspected surface to be illuminated. The image passing through the blade (11) is directed by a defecting mirror (7) through a ground glass blade (16) with a central opening (17). An eyeglass system (8) allows a real image to be observed which is formed at the plane (9) where a support (13) allows a number of photographs to be taken.
