<p>873,770. Reducing iron ores. OFFICE NATIONAL INDUSTRIEL DE L'AZOTE. March 28, 1958 [March 30, 1957], No. 10105/58. Class 72 [Also in Group XII] A process for the production of iron by the reduction of a sub-divided natural iron oxide with a reducing gas comprises maintaining the oxide in a turbulent fluidized bed by a stream of reducing gas, the temperature being above 565‹C. and the rate of gas flow being such that the frequency of collisions between the particles s is sufficiently great to seal the pores in the particles. Natural iron oxide comprises naturally occurring oxides of iron and the products of decomposition of other naturally occurring iron compounds. As shown the finely divided oxide is fed through a device 6 into a vessel 1 having a partition 7 extending across the vessel but not to the bottom thereof. A reducing gas is fed into a space below a perforated plate 3 to produce a fluidized bed 4 in the vessel. The oxide passes below the plate 7 and iron particles are discharged at 9 with a gas speed of 0.4 to 2.0 metres per second the discharged iron particles are non-pyrophoric due to sealing of the pores.
