The invention comprises bis-(trifluoromethylphenyl) phosphonates having the general formula <FORM:1044146/C2/1> wherein R is a C1-C13 hydrocarbon group free from oefinic and acetylenic unsaturation. They may be obtained by reacting a trifluoromethyl-phenol with a phosphonic dihalide R.P(O)X2, wherein X is a halogen atom. The radical R may be alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl, arylcycloalkyl, alkaryl or alkylcycloalkyl and several such radicals are specified. Suitable reaction temperatures are generally from 0 DEG to 150 DEG C. and the reaction may be carried out in an inert organic solvent or diluent, e.g. an ether, a halogenated alkane, an amide or a ketone. The reaction is preferably effected in the presence of an acid acceptor, e.g. a tertiary organic base or an alkali or alkaline earth metal oxide or salt thereof with a weak or easily displaced acid. The products are useful as flame-proofing agents, heat-exchange media, fire-combating agents, flame-proofing plasticizers for synthetic resins, lubricants, and functional fluids. |
