The circuit 4 actuates a motor 11 in the reverse direction and actuates a read gate control circuit 5 when the circuit 13 counts the pulses 18 by an amount equal to the value JK-l. The circuit 5 recognizes a block N through a block initiation recognizing circuit 7. The circuit 4 drives the tape in the reverse direction as it is and stops the tape at a time point M when a block termination recognizing circuit 6 recognizes the termination of the block N. At the same time, the circuit 13 counts the pulses 18 between M and P. At this time point, the circuit 14 calculates MP-l again. The circuit 4 drives the tape in the forward direction and actuates the circuit 5 when the circuit 13 counts MP-l to open the read gate at a point H.</p>
