PURPOSE:To provide a hard Al alloy flat bar for a can of a hardening type by baking finish having excellent ironing, flanging and riveting properties in particular by limiting the rate of the area where an intermetallic compd. occupies in an Al alloy having a specific compsn. as well as the size thereof and the width of its crystal grains. CONSTITUTION:An Al alloy flat bar is an Al alloy contg., by weight, 0.2-0.7% Fe, 0.05-0.5% Cu, 0.5-2.5% Mg and 0.5-2.0% Mn, and satisfying the formula. The rate of the area where the intermetallic compd. occupies when viewed from the surface of the rolled plate is 0.5-5%, the size of each intermetallic compd. is <=45mu and the average width of the crystal grains viewed from the surface of the rolled plate is <=25mu. Such flat bar is obtd. by casting the alloy having the above-described compsn. to about >=100mm. thickness after melting, and soaking the cast alloy at about >=530 deg.C and cold rolling the alloy if necessary after hot rolling, heating the rolled alloy at a rate of about >=100 deg.C/min at about 400- 600 deg.C, holding the alloy right after said heating or within 10min thereafter, cooling the alloy to about 150 deg.C at a rate of about >=100 deg.C/hr and cold rolling the alloy at about >=10% so that the total draft of the hot and cold rolling is regulated to about >=99%.
