PURPOSE:To obtain a flame-retardant cable free of generation of toxic gas, having satisfactory cable characteristics such as water-proofing property, flexibility, etc., and suitable for communication use, etc., by compounding a phosphorus compound with cellulose and if necessary, an inorganic filler, etc., and filling the composition in a cable. CONSTITUTION:The objective flame-retardant cable can be produced by filling a composition composed of (A) 40-90(wt)% phosphorus compound (e.g. phosphoric acid ester), (B) 2-30% cellulose (e.g. cellulose ester, cellulose ether, etc.), (C) 5-50% inorganic filler having an average particle diameter of <30mum (e.g. aluminum hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide, etc.) and (D) 2-7% polyethylene having an average molecular weight of <=5,000.
