PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as an intermediate for medicines, etc., in good yield industrially and advantageously under a relatively low pres sure by simple reaction operation, by reducing a polythiobisphenol with hydrogen in the presence of a nickel catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A polythiobisphenol expressed by formula I (n is an integer 2-4; R1-R4 are H or 1-4C alkyl) or formula II is reduced with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst to give a mercaptophenol. Examples of the catalyst include Raney-nickel catalyst, nickel diatomaceous earth catalyst, etc. The catalyst is preferably used in an amount of 1-30%, particularly 5-10% based on the raw material compound. The hydrogenation reaction rate is increased by poisoning and adjusting the Raney-nickel with an organosulfur compound.
