PURPOSE:To obtain a high definition stereoscopic image even when a left and a right image which are small in the number of picture elements per unit area are used as display image surfaces by putting the left image on the right side of a intereye line and the right images on the left side at the same height when they are viewed from the side of an observer, and obtaining the stereoscopic image between the left and right images and the observer. CONSTITUTION:The intereye line is a horizontal line which runs in through the mid- point of the segment connecting both eyes at right angles to the segment when a person (observer) who sees the stereoscopic image looks in the horizontal direction; and the left image 3 is put on the right side of the intereye line and the right image 4 is put on the left when they are viewed from the observer so that they are at the same height. Then, the stereoscopic image 5 formed among the left image 3, right is seen by the observer at an easy-to-see distance or predetermined distance to that the left image 3 is seen with the left eye 1 and the right image 4 is seen with the right eye 2. The maximum width of the stereoscopic space 13 where the stereoscopic image 5 is obtained is smaller than eye reference length B, so the size of the display surfaces are not limited and a high definition stereoscopic image is obtained by increasing the image surfaces.
