PURPOSE:To enable a fuel cell to start up in a shorter time by setting up a by-pass passage for short-circuiting of a heat exchanger as well as a switching- valve which not only opens the above by-pass passage when the fuel cell starts up, but also closes it during its stationary operation. CONSTITUTION:At the time of start up of a fuel cell (FC stack) formed by stacking up singles cells in series in a collective shape to obtain a derived voltage, if the by-pass passage 19 is released to open a switching-valve 20, the effective capacity of a cooling system is reduced to a great extent as well as enabling the heat from a temperature controller to heat the FC stack effectively, since the cooling medium from a cooling plate 14 flows through a by-pass passage with a small resistance. At the same time, when the flow of a circulating pump 17 is controlled so as to be less than during its stationary operation by means of a flow controller 27, temperature of the cooling medium within the cooling plate is vaised together with a reducing effect on its heat capacity caused by the by-pass passage thus resulting in more effective heat conduction to the FC stack. In this way, the temperature of the FC stack can be raised in a shorter time. |
