PURPOSE:To form an original reader irradiating uniform bias light and attaining high-speed reading with simple constitution by providing a substrate coated with phosphor near a photoelectric conversion element and using the light emis sion of the phosphor as bias light. CONSTITUTION:A photoelectric converting element 1 made of a photoconductive thin film is formed on a transparent insulation substrate in the main scanning direction, sensitivity is given by activating thermal processing to form an ohmic electrode. Then the hotoelectric conversion element 1 and a solid-state light source 2 such as an LED having spectral sensitivity peak are used to irradiate the surface of the original 3, its reflected light 4 is formed on the element 1 through a convergent fiber array 5, and the phosphor 6 comprising the combination of ZnS:Cu or ZnS: Mn and irradiating light no contributing the desired luminescent color to the image forming of the convergent fiber array 5 as stimulated light 7 is applied to the rear face of the transparent insulation substance forming the element 1 so as not to interrupt the reflected light 4 in order to match the fluorescent color to the spectral sensitivity characteristic of the element 1. Thus, the titled reader is constituted of inexpensive materials without using an expensive LED.
