PURPOSE:To attain a word collation processing at high speed and with high accuracy by limiting word data to be collated by means of code data written with such numbers as that gives a high reading accuracy, then retrieving the data. CONSTITUTION:An image on an input document paper 1 is read by an OCR 2, and its output is supplied to a word collation processing part 3. This part 3 collate a word by using a word dictionary 4. The dictionary 4 has a code data storing means which stores code data also that corresponds to respective word data, while the processing part 3 has a word data limiting means to limit the word data in the dictionary 4 to be collated by using the code data storing means of the dictionary 4 based on the result of the reading of the code data.
