The sawing machine (1) has in the frame (2) a rocking tools holder (3) also sliding in a striaght line and to which a straight sawblade (16) is fixed, its movement being generated by a ram. Cutting movement of the holder is at more than 45 deg. to the horizontal and preferably nearly vertical, the working stroke of the blade being from top to bottom. The machine performs a thrusting cut, and the rocking axis (6) is at the top of the machine frame (2). The blade teeth (17) point towards the main part of the toolholder, so that the work (33) is contained between them. The angle of the blade to the direction of the toolholder movement is such that during the working stroke the teeth penetrate steadily deeper into the work. The drive mechanism is hydraulic, with a variable stroke.
